'Slater' is a song devoted to Tyler's bike, which ends with Frank Ocean speaking the words 'You're talking to a fucking bike. On the song, Tyler proclaims his desire to get into contact with his estranged father and also mentions some problems that his friends are going through. 'Answer' features a simple guitar melody over heavy drums. The opening and title track, 'Wolf', begins with piano chords and breathy vocals, and the character Sam appears at the end of the track. The story presented in Wolf has been said to link to Tyler's two previous projects, with debates occurring on whether Wolf comes chronologically before or after Goblin. TC makes his last appearance on a Tyler album on the final track 'Lone'. Wolf is a concept album that features a continuous story of characters Wolf, Sam and Salem. Talking about rape and cutting bodies up, it just doesn't interest me anymore. In November 2011, in an interview with Spin, Tyler expressed wanting to shift away from the themes of his previous work, stating: As if he cared.Tyler's two prior projects, Bastard and Goblin, contained lyrics and themes commonly used in the horrorcore subgenre, which Tyler claimed to not be part of. It may not have the global appeal of his OF stable mateвЂ™s вЂChannel OrangeвЂ™, but it is certainly his most accessible and enjoyable. And, having never been one to hide his love of and resulting inspiration from NERD, Tyler even manages to recruit Pharrell for guest vocals on вЂIFHYвЂ™. Asking SamвЂ™s band at the beginning, вЂњSo you guys are into jazz?вЂќ this is an album which then freely segues from the mellow synths and Frank Ocean backed vocals of вЂAwkwardвЂ™, to the fast-paced, boastful and just plain bat-shit swag-fest that is вЂDomo 23вЂ™. More than just technically proficient, вЂWolfвЂ™ successfully manages to dive deeper into TylerвЂ™s love of diverse musical tastes in a way that was previously showcased on occasion. This is also due to TylerвЂ™s growing production ability which, always ambitious, now feels confident and secure. The recurring themes of an absent father, a recently deceased grandmother and newfound fame, popularity and wealth all manage to sit remarkably comfortably in one album, no matter how jarring the actual experience. What has certainly developed though, is TylerвЂ™s ability to make all these things cohere. And at eighteen tracks long, there is still plenty of space for the riotous wordplay and aggressive imagery in the likes of вЂJambaвЂ™, вЂDomo 23вЂ™ and вЂTrashwangвЂ™. Songs like вЂIFHYвЂ™ bounce along with hooks like вЂњWeвЂ™re good at being troubledвЂќ while in вЂCowboyвЂ™, Tyler deals directly with the whole multiple personas/names issue by rapping вЂњKnock-knock motherfucks, itвЂ™s me, mister cluster-fuck.вЂ™ Even the most emotionally open and personal track вЂAnswerвЂ™, at one point deals with a desperate longing to talk to TylerвЂ™s absent father by flitting between a naГЇve hope for reunion and absolutely scathing hatred. Thematically then, вЂWolfвЂ™ certainly retains the irreverent, self-contradictory and generally unhinged nature of all TylerвЂ™s back catalogue. The bristly greeting done, weвЂ™re promptly taken through introductions of the various personas at вЂCamp Flog GnawвЂ™, the summer camp concept binding the album together: Ace Creator greets Wolf, makes the necessary gesture towards Sam and the band and leaves Sam eventually responding with вЂњstay the fuck out of our way and weвЂ™ll stay out of yours.вЂќ In short, internal conflict is back on the menu. What we do get though, is a much more confessional and in fact listenable album. We know where we stand and, despite general hints before release that вЂWolf вЂmight take a different direction from previous albums вЂBastardвЂ™ and вЂGoblinвЂ™, there are no huge surprises. For existing fans and detractors alike though, this is pretty standard. If youвЂ™re not already familiar with Tyler the CreatorвЂ™s work, this may come as a slight shock.
